First day on your new consulting assignment – 7 tips for success

Starting a new consulting assignment is always a bit special. You enter a new environment, meet new people – and are expected to quickly understand both the content of the assignment and the needs of the client.

It’s a chance to make a difference – but also an opportunity to build relationships, demonstrate your value and build trust from the start. Your first day often sets the tone for the whole assignment, and what you do (and how you do it) can influence the work environment, results and future collaborations.

To help you land on the right foot from day one, we’ve put together seven concrete tips – based on our own experiences as both employers and consultants.

1. prepare yourself carefully

A good start begins long before you walk through the door. Take the time to read up on the assignment – the type of organization you will be working in, the contacts you will have, the goals and challenges.

Feel free to find out:

  • What is expected of you in the first weeks
  • Who are the key people you should work with
  • If there are procedures, tools or platforms you should know about

Showing that you are informed and prepared signals both respect and professionalism.

2. Be on time – and preferably a little earlier

This is perhaps the most obvious advice – but also one of the most important. Being on site in good time shows that you are serious, structured and ready to take the job seriously.

Having a few minutes to yourself will also give you the opportunity to mentally land, exhale and gather yourself for the day. It can make a big difference to how you are perceived – and how you feel.

3. ask questions and listen actively

Your first day is likely to be full of information, impressions and meetings. Take the opportunity to listen in – not just to what is said, but to how it is said. What issues are important? What does communication look like? What seems to be the “unwritten culture”?

Dare to ask questions too. It shows that you are curious, engaged and want to understand – and it helps you get up to speed faster. You don’t need to know everything straight away – but you do need to show that you want to learn.

4. Building relationships – even if the assignment is short

A consulting assignment is a collaboration. And collaborations are built on relationships. So take the time to introduce yourself, show interest in others’ roles and connect with the people you will be working with.

Strong relationships don’t just make everyday life easier – they also build trust, increase your ability to influence and make going to work more enjoyable.

Tips:

  • Learn the names of key people
  • Ask open-ended questions: “How long have you been working here?” or “What do you find most challenging about this project?”
  • Offer yourself – but keep a professional tone

5. Be flexible and adaptable

It’s not uncommon for a first day not to go quite according to plan. Systems can break down, schedules change or meetings get canceled. That’s okay – what matters is how you deal with it.

As a consultant, your ability to adapt is one of your greatest assets. Show that you are flexible, solution-oriented and not bogged down in details. It will be appreciated – whatever the scope of the assignment.

6. Set reasonable goals for the day

You are not expected to perform fully from the first hour. Your focus should be on:

  • Understanding the mission
  • Familiarize yourself with the environment
  • Getting to know the team
  • Asking questions and recording key insights

Set small, concrete goals: e.g. to have a clear picture of your first tasks, to have introduced yourself to your closest colleagues and to understand what is most important to focus on in the first week.

It shows that you are structured – without rushing into anything.

7. Give a positive and professional impression

First impressions are about much more than what you say – they are about how you say it, how you act, how you treat others.

Keep in mind:

  • Body language: eye contact, smile, open posture
  • Tone and wording
  • Commitment to what you do

Showing that you are friendly, confident, committed and professional lays the foundation for a good working relationship – and strengthens your personal brand as a consultant.

A strong start creates long-term value

Your first day is an opportunity to show who you are – but also to get to know the organization, make contact and set a positive tone for the whole assignment.

Being prepared, present and engaged shows that you take your mission seriously. It is appreciated – and can be the difference between a temporary assignment and a long-term partnership.
